Port of Auckland kicked off the construction of its Bledisloe North wharf with a blessing event this morning. Attended by Prime Minister Luxon and Minister Bishop the milestone event celebrated the start of nearly $200m of developments to make the port big ship capable and support the cruise tourism industry.

The consent, which was the first approved and started under the Fast Track programme, includes the development of two wharves – Bledisloe North and the completion of Fergusson North wharf.

“Our investments here today go beyond infrastructure. They are about supporting growth and opportunity, and ensuring Auckland continues to thrive as an economic hub for trade, and tourism,” says Roger Gray, Port of Auckland CEO.

“One of the most exciting parts of this development is that this will make us big ship capable for cruise and containers, and support Auckland well into the future.

“We’re also investing in the creation of Auckland’s newest cruise terminal. We’ll be co-designing it with iwi, customers, stakeholders, and the community to reflect the rich cultural, social, and economic diversity of our city” says Gray.

These investments set the stage for a stronger, more resilient port, one that connects Auckland to the world and delivers for our city.

“Bledisloe North wharf is a win for Aucklanders too - it enables the port to work with Council to provide more access to the waterfront for Aucklanders and reduce the number of cruise ships needing to use the downtown ferry basin” says Gray.

The developments commenced today support Auckland Council’s Long-Term plan and the port’s long-term strategy to consolidate port operations whilst retaining enough operational area to support the critical trade that powers Auckland businesses and homes.

Notes:

  • Port of Auckland held over 150 stakeholder engagement sessions prior to applying for consent.
  • Construction of Bledisloe North Wharf is expected to take 14-16 months. HEB are the construction partners for the project.
