Major milestone for Port of Auckland at Bledisloe North wharf

Port of Auckland is celebrating a major construction milestone at its new Bledisloe North wharf with the laying of the first precast panel slab on top of the wharf. With deck laying now underway, the construction of Auckland's first big-ship multi-use wharf is entering a pivotal phase.

Deck laying marks the beginning of the final phase of construction, where the new wharf takes shape and begins resembling a ship ready facility. It involves the installation of 290 precast concrete panels, with approximately 50% cast on-site and 50% cast off-site.

“This is a big moment for our city and a day that is worth celebrating. The work being done here is part of our $200 million investment to unlock economic growth through more cruise tourism and roll-on, roll-off freight capacity for greater Auckland. It sets us up well into the future and confirms our gateway status to the world,” says Roger Gray, Port of Auckland CEO.

“Bledisloe North wharf is the first of our infrastructure projects to be approved under the fast-track legislation. From consent application to project completion will take just two years.

“This major infrastructure project goes hand in hand with the creation of Auckland’s newest international cruise terminal. We’re proud to share that this project is also progressing and on track for completion in early 2027,” says Gray.

“Today’s milestone is part of Port of Auckland’s more than $200 million infrastructure investment to make the port big-ship capable. Delivery of the work at Bledisloe North is being conducted through the port's construction partner, HEB while the cruise terminal is being built by Hawkins. Both projects are on track to officially open in March 2027.

Through the first phase of construction, the piling programme, HEB installed 242 piles as the deck foundation with more than 3,800 m³ of concrete required.
Following the installation of the precast panels, HEB will place approximately 2,580m³ of concrete over the panels to form the wharf deck.
Once dry, the installation of the marine furniture and wharf services will commence, including fenders and bollards.
The port’s fast-track consent for Bledisloe North wharf was granted in August 2025 and covers approval for the Fergusson North extension.
Once the Bledisloe North project is complete the port will then shift focus to extending Fergusson North.

	Any General Cargo (Breakbulk) or Vehicle (not classified as a car), that is discharged from a vessel, landed on the wharf/quay and reloaded to the same vessel. Charge is per tonne or m3, whichever is greater. 1 tonne/m3 minimum applies.

	A single item of any cargo greater than 40 tonnes through either the vehicle or non-vehicle terminal. Charged in addition to General Cargo (Import, Export, Tranship) wharfage costs. Transhipment charge split in half - arriving transhipment charged (50%) to the arriving operator and departing transhipment charged (50%) to the departing operator. Charged on tonne only.
Misc	Vessel Transfer Import/Export (incl. via submersible vessel)	Auckland	Terminal, Multi-Cargo	$4.30 per tonne / m3	-
	Vessel discharge/load direct to/from water (incl. via submersible vessel). Charge as tonne or m3, whichever is greater.
