Port of Auckland’ new pilot vessel, Te Ihu, entered the Waitematā Harbour today for the first time after a four-day sailing across the Tasman Sea.

Arriving into New Zealand via Opua in the Bay of Islands, she made the journey south after a few days rest, recovery and preparation for entering service in the Port of Auckland fleet.

Port of Auckland GM Marine, Multi-Cargo and Cruise, Chris Mills said “after many months of preparation and anticipation, we’re thrilled to finally welcome Te Ihu into our fleet.

“Importantly, I’d like to thank Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Tumu Whakarae (Chief Executive Officer), Lisa Davis, for helping to name and bless Te Ihu and of course the Marine team from the port that developed this boat – in particular Murray McGehan and Hart Marine in Australia,” said Chris.

A blessing will be held today with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei at the port alongside Pilot Boat Master, Murray McGehan, a key member of the project team in recognition of his 50-year service to the port.

Lisa said it was a proud moment to welcome Te Ihu to the Waitematā, having gifted the name to Port of Auckland.

“The name Te Ihu draws on the knowledge and ingenuity of our tūpuna. Traditional waka carvings beneath the prow were not purely decorative but were designed to work with the movement of water to support safe navigation. Much like the tauihu, Te Ihu will lead the way, guiding larger vessels safely into port.

“For me, this naming also brings together Murray’s lifetime of experience on the water and my own whakapapa connection to the Waitematā through Tuperiri and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

“What we share is our aroha for the harbour and its wellbeing. My hope is that Te Ihu carries that same care and responsibility as it guides vessels safely through the Waitematā for generations to come.”

Port of Auckland will put Te Ihu through her paces with commissioning in the Waitematā Harbour before operations commence in the coming months. In the intervening time the Wakatere and Akarana pilot boats will continue to serve our customers.
