Port of Auckland to expand cruise season footprint at Shed 10

Port of Auckland and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU) are working together on plans that will see Shed 10 continue to play a key role in Auckland's growing cruise industry.

The proposed arrangement will provide Port of Auckland with use of Shed 10 during the cruise season, creating a dedicated and more efficient terminal experience for cruise passengers, operators, Customs, MPI, and other border agencies. Outside cruise requirements, the facility would continue to support TAU's event programme.

The arrangements align with the Auckland Cruise Plan 2026-2036 and reflect a shared commitment to supporting Auckland's visitor economy while making the best use of a significant waterfront asset.

Port of Auckland is proposing a range of improvements to Shed 10 to enhance its function as a cruise terminal. Planned upgrades include improved passenger facilities, enhanced wayfinding and signage, upgraded operational areas for border agencies and cruise processing, improved lighting, additional electrical infrastructure, and accessibility and safety improvements.

Port of Auckland General Manager Marine, Multi-Cargo and Cruise, Chris Mills, said the project will incorporate many operational features of the port’s new Auckland International Cruise Terminal.

“By working together with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, we’re creating a solution that supports Auckland’s cruise industry while ensuring Shed 10 remains a flexible venue for the city. The proposed improvements will help deliver a better experience for passengers, cruise lines operating mid-size vessels and the many organisations that help welcome visitors to Auckland,” said Chris.

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Director of Destination, Annie Dundas, said the proposal supports Auckland’s ambition to strengthen its position as a leading cruise hub and deliver a better experience for passengers.

“Cruise is an important part of Auckland’s visitor economy, and investing in the experience we offer passengers and cruise lines will help ensure Tāmaki Makaurau remains a compelling and competitive destination, while retaining Shed 10 as an important events venue outside cruise requirements,” said Annie.

The proposed upgrades are expected to be delivered ahead of the 2027/28 cruise season, subject to final agreements and approvals. The parties will continue to work closely together on heritage considerations, lease arrangements and the detailed design of the improvements.

	Any General Cargo (Breakbulk) or Vehicle (not classified as a car), that is discharged from a vessel, landed on the wharf/quay and loaded to another vessel operated through the Vehicle Terminal. Transhipment charged twice - arriving transhipment charged to the arriving operator and departing transhipment charged to the departing operator. Charged as tonne or m3, whichever is greater. 1 tonne/m3 minimum applies.

	A single item of any cargo greater than 40 tonnes through either the vehicle or non-vehicle terminal. Charged in addition to General Cargo (Import, Export, Tranship) wharfage costs. Transhipment charge split in half - arriving transhipment charged (50%) to the arriving operator and departing transhipment charged (50%) to the departing operator. Charged on tonne only.
Misc	Vessel Transfer Import/Export (incl. via submersible vessel)	Auckland	Terminal, Multi-Cargo	$4.30 per tonne / m3	-
	Vessel discharge/load direct to/from water (incl. via submersible vessel). Charge as tonne or m3, whichever is greater.
