Port of Auckland gifts marine pilot vessel to Ports Authority Tonga

Port of Auckland has gifted a pilot vessel to Ports Authority Tonga, reinforcing a longstanding partnership and supporting the continued development of maritime capability in the Pacific.

The vessel was bestowed with the name ‘Fonualei’ by His Majesty King Tupou VI. Over the years, Fonualei has played an important role in Port of Auckland’s marine operations and it will soon begin a new chapter supporting safe and efficient pilot transfers in Tonga.

The handover reflects Port of Auckland’s commitment to sharing expertise, resources and capability with Pacific partners, helping strengthen maritime safety and operational excellence across the region.

Port of Auckland General Manager Container Terminal Operations and Engineering, Tessa Auelua, said the gift recognises the deep connections between the port, its people and the Pacific.

“Approximately 35 percent of our workforce identifies as Pasifika, and many of our people maintain strong ties to Pacific communities across the region. Those connections are an important part of who we are as an organisation and help shape the way we work with our Pacific partners.

“Pacific Island trade remains a significant and valued part of our business, and we are proud of the strong relationships we have developed throughout the region.

“Over many years, Port of Auckland has supported the development of marine pilots across the Pacific and continues to work with partner ports to share knowledge and strengthen maritime capability. Senior Pilot John Barker has played a key role in these efforts, supporting pilotage development and fostering strong relationships throughout the region,” said Tessa.

	A single item of any cargo greater than 40 tonnes through either the vehicle or non-vehicle terminal. Charged in addition to General Cargo (Import, Export, Tranship) wharfage costs. Transhipment charge split in half - arriving transhipment charged (50%) to the arriving operator and departing transhipment charged (50%) to the departing operator. Charged on tonne only.
