Cargo Handling

We’re well equipped with all the latest machinery and software, but it’s our people who really make the difference. Our teams are committed to delivering the best service possible to our customers and the importers and exporters who use our facilities.

Operating 24/7, our port is located next to Auckland’s central business district.  Nearly three-quarters of the port’s inbound cargo (by value) is for Auckland.  We can deliver goods quickly, be cost effective and minimise our carbon footprint because the port is close to the city.

We have reconfigured our port into two main terminals plus multi-cargo wharves. Our Bledisloe Multi-Purpose Terminal handles roll-on roll-off vessels and other freight.  The Fergusson Container Terminal is a dedicated container handling facility. The terminal approach is global best-practice and helps us use our land efficiently while boosting productivity.

Our operations are facilitated by advanced operating systems run by our centralised control and planning office, and carried out by teams working around the clock – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In October 2015, our company was awarded a Highly Commended award in the 2015 Lloyd’s List Asia Awards for Terminal Operator of the Year.

Fergusson Container Terminal

The Fergusson Container Terminal is the most efficient in Australasia with record productivity. It has the most advanced and comprehensive container terminal infrastructure in New Zealand, with five post-panamax ship-to-shore cranes on 610 metres of berth. Each of the cranes is twin-lift capable and the three newest cranes boast extended outreach to help better service large, wide ships.

It is also home to the largest and most sophisticated straddle carrier fleet in New Zealand, made up almost entirely of hybrid diesel-electric machines. All of the Auckland port's container cranes and straddle carriers are twin-lift capable, meaning they have the capacity to lift two 20-foot containers at a time. This provides Auckland with a distinct competitive advantage over other New Zealand ports and enables greater efficiencies in cargo handling. Our straddles are low-emission, low-noise, diesel-electric models. They can also provide back-up power generation to the port, ensuring that refrigerated cargo is always protected.

We are in the final phase of completing the Fergusson Container Terminal expansion, increasing it by 3.6 hectares and adding a third berth along the northern face.  The project began in 1998 and when complete in 2019 will enable Ports of Auckland to accommodate larger ships and Auckland's growing freight needs for the foreseeable future.

Bledisloe Multi-Purpose Terminal

The Bledisloe Multi-Purpose Terminal is located to the west of the Fergusson Container Terminal, offering 14.5 hectares of operational space. Its longest berth (B3) at 260 metres is our primary roll-on roll-off berth but it also has two ship-to-shore cranes, which are twin-lift capable with a 41-metre outreach and 29.5-metre lift height.  Bledisloe has two other berths: B1 for Golden Bay Cement and B2 for smaller general cargo and heavy lift vessels.


Our multi-cargo facilities encompass six wharves on the Waitematā waterfront: Captain Cook, Marsden, Jellicoe and Freyberg Wharves in the middle of the port and Wynyard Wharf, which provides a bulk liquid terminal in the west.

We handle a variety of breakbulk cargo, steel, timber, dry and liquid bulk, containers and vehicles. Many of the vessels calling at the multi-cargo wharves serve the Pacific Islands.

Ports of Auckland manages berthage and wharf space, with cargo-handling services provided by third-party stevedoring companies. We lease cargo-handling equipment including, a fleet of eight cargo-handling units with fork hoists, a reach stacker and top-lift gantry trucks.
