New Innovative Alliance to Open Up Supply Chain

Ports of Auckland and Netlogix join forces to establish an open, collaborative supply chain network across New Zealand.

Ports of Auckland and Netlogix today announced the creation of Nexus Logistics Limited, a joint venture that will provide independent container logistics and distribution services across New Zealand.

An important aspect of the venture is that it will operate as an open platform, available to all stakeholders in the supply chain.

Nexus Logistics draws on the experience and capability of both Ports of Auckland and Netlogix to help develop the national supply chain infrastructure.

With the smart use of technology, the venture will enable the efficient handling of New Zealand exports and imports. In conjunction with the strength of the regional partners, this will offer customers flexibility and choice, linking service providers together to provide an integrated, independent logistics network across New Zealand.

Ports of Auckland Chief Executive Tony Gibson said, “This opens up new ground. With Nexus Logistics, we’re connecting the dots – our partnership with Napier Port and Icepak at Longburn, the new cold store with Polarcold at Wiri and we’re also well advanced working with parties to create a crossdock facility at Wiri. All of these combine to create an optimised and open supply chain.”

“This investment provides us with a conduit to truly engage with cargo owners, while investing in the supply chain to reduce wasted capacity. There is an incredible amount of potential in the New Zealand supply chain that is not realised because of the widely acknowledged inefficiency of empty truck and container movements out of import dominant Auckland to meet export container requirements. This inefficiency is borne, directly or indirectly, by all stakeholders in the import / export supply chain,” he said.

Netlogix Chief Executive, Chinthaka Abeywickrama said, “A key aspect of the Nexus Logistics business model is maximising customer choice, underpinned by a strong open market principle and a commitment to operator independence.”

“By developing the Wiri Intermodal Freight Hub further and utilising an optimal mix of road, rail and coastal transport capacities and services, Nexus Logistics will facilitate an efficient flow of cargo across New Zealand,” he said.

Ports of Auckland subsidiary CONLINXX will become a fully owned subsidiary of, and service provider to, Nexus Logistics.
