Welcome to Port of Auckland

The city of Auckland and its port have grown together on the Waitematā for more than 175 years. We are part of the special character of our city and play a vital role in our economy, delivering the things people need and enjoy. We are also New Zealand's main cruise port and have a network of freight hubs throughout the North Island that support an efficient supply chain.

Auckland is a growing city. As the port on Auckland's doorstep we are the most direct route into the Auckland market and we expect our volumes to continue to climb as Auckland grows. We are investing to ensure we can meet that growth. Nearly three-quarters of our inbound cargo is for Auckland – the delivery of goods is quick, the cost of goods is low and our carbon footprint is small because the port is close to the city.

We are a story of change as well as growth. Where once small sailing ships were unloaded by hand, now freight is used by giant machines and sophisticated software. As we've got more efficient, our port now handles more freight than ever before but on less land than in the past, so former port land has been opened up for public use.  Much of the central business district is built on former port land.

Our vision and strategy

From the construction of Queen Street wharf in the 1850s until now, we have connected the world to Tāmaki Makaurau. As New Zealand’s largest import port, we've developed hand in hand with Auckland, bringing in goods people need to thrive.

From Singapore and Rotterdam, through to Sydney and Shanghai, thriving global cities depend on reliable supply chains. So, it’s no coincidence these are just some of the powerhouse cities depending on port operations. Island nations like New Zealand need comprehensive port strategies. Ports create jobs, they enable business, and in the case of Auckland, the port provides a dividend to Auckland Council.

Most of our inbound cargo is for Auckland. We are proud of the role we play in Auckland’s economy and how we support Aucklanders through our dividends.

We’re proud to represent New Zealand and facilitate sustainable growth of trade across the upper North Island, and especially proud to be Auckland’s port.
