Port of Auckland first port to join Pride Pledge

Port of Auckland has become the first port in the country to partner with Pride Pledge 

In February this year, Port of Auckland marked Pride month for the first time with 'Port Pride' to show its support for the rainbow community.

The alignment with Pride Pledge is another step in the port's diversity and inclusion journey.

Port of Auckland CEO Roger Gray says the port has a broad objective of greater diversity, inclusivity and acceptance within the workplace.

"Fostering a sense of belonging for LGBTQIA+ employees signifies the company's commitment to diversity and equality," says Roger.  "Celebrating our Diversity is a core element to our strategy and the culture at the port. I'm proud to be the first port signed up to Pride Pledge and lead the industry to be more inclusive. Organisations with an embedded culture of valuing diversity tend to be more productive, empowering people to do what they do best."

The Pride Pledge training, resources and advice will help the port grow awareness and understanding of LGBTQIA+ communities with its staff.   

Committee and rainbow community members Edwin Ng and Dustin Lakey are both proud of the port's partnership with Pride Pledge.

"The port is showing that diversity and acceptance are more than just buzzwords," says Edwin.  "This brings visibility and real commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community. This is leadership that inspires real change and sets a powerful example for others in the industry." 

Dustin, who is a "proud out port employee" says this is an important step in the port's Pride journey. "This commitment sends a powerful message, not only to our LGBTQ+ employees but to everyone in our community, that diversity, inclusion, and respect are core values at the heart of our workplace," says Dustin. "It reinforces the idea that everyone deserves to bring their authentic selves to work, without fear of discrimination or exclusion."

To kickstart the programme, the port is looking to conduct training for its leadership teams and provide rainbow-focused education and resources across the company.

Pride Pledge director Martin King says he is excited to welcome the port to join more than 300 other organisations in the network. "Organisations like the port play a pivotal role in rainbow communities and by taking the Pledge shows leadership for other large employers and industry to follow suit."

The Pride Pledge partnership will also provide the port opportunities to network and learn from other Pledge organisations.
