With a number of  users already on board, the response and consequent uptake has been very pleasing.

Name change notification

Ports of Auckland's specialised pack and unpack service has now been renamed SeaPACK.

Since SeaPACK is a common user facility servicing both the Terminal and Multi Cargo operations, it was considered appropriate to bring about the change in name.

Concrete repairs on Captain Cook Breastwork

Shotcrete

Extensive concrete repair works are underway beneath the Captain Cook Breastwork.

This is part of the detailed underwharf inspections, which are undertaken every 2 – 5 years (depending on the condition of the structure) by a Structural Engineer.

Regular checks are required since marine salts penetrate the concrete and cause the reinforcing to corrode. The corroding reinforcing then expands forcing the covering concrete off, which in turn accelerates corrosion.

At present, repairs are being undertaken to the piles, beams and slab underside. The process involves removing the weakened concrete using hydrodemolition (20,000 psi water blasting). The exposed reinforcement is then cleaned up, rust removed, and if there is significant loss of reinforcement section a new length of reinforcing is welded in. The repair area is then reconcreted using shotcrete (sprayed concrete).
