New NZ ship arrives in Auckland

Seafuels, a joint venture company between Ports of Auckland and Pacific Basin Shipping, welcomed the arrival of a new 80-metre, 3,900 tonne fuel tanker to the Auckland harbour early yesterday morning.

On arrival to Auckland, the ship, its New Zealand captain and crew will have completed a 12 week, 11,000 kilometre journey from a shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey.

The tanker, which will be officially named in a ceremony next month, will provide a new re-fuelling service for cruise ships and commercial vessels calling at the Port of Auckland.

Seafuels Chairman Jens Madsen said refuelling was an essential facility for many visiting ships and would benefit the Auckland economy. “Offering re-fuelling services in Auckland is vital to retaining and growing the numbers of calls from international cargo and cruise ships.”

Mr Madsen said the company was pleased to have the ship and its five New Zealand crew home safely after their lengthy journey through Suez and the Gulf of Aden.

Top container port

Ports of Auckland has been named by Container Management 2009 as one of the world's top container ports.

POAL has retained its 105th position and is the only New Zealand port to be listed in the publication.

Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong are listed as the world's top container ports.

Australian ports to make the top 100 include Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, being named 51st, 64th and 96th respectively.

Systems update

Belly-load of yachts

A regular visitor to New Zealand, the yacht carrying vessel Super Servant 3 arrived at POAL last week.

The submersible vessel is used by yacht owners for international transport, as it avoids the perils of a sea crossing.

The Super Servant 3 discharged six of the yachts onboard, and loaded another seven. The vessel was in port for just under three days.

Onboard the vessel was the stylish 2003 Luxury Yacht, Loretta Ann, from Alloy Yachts.

Tugboat to the rescue

Ports of Auckland tugboat Tika had just finished helping a ship out of the Onehunga port at 7am on July 22 when another ship spotted a man in the water.

The man discovered had decided to swim home to Hillsborough, across the Manukau Harbour, after a night 'on the town'.

Port of Onehunga operations manager Brian Jarman was on board and the tug set off to rescue the drunk swimmer.
