Pikes Point development works complete

Ports of Auckland has completed the first stage of development and enhancement works at its Pikes Point site in Onehunga.

A significant part of the 18-hectare site will now be further developed as a transit, storage and Customs-bonded processing facility for imported vehicles by Car Haulaways.

It will also incorporate a new heliport facility, to be developed by Hangar One Limited.

The Port's development works included clay capping the former landfill site, service installation, paving, road access and landscaping with more than 7,500 native plants.

Still trucking

Truck operations quickly returned to normal after a power failure at the Fergusson road office temporarily impacted the Port's ability to process trucks early this morning.

General Manager Operations Grant Jorey said the incident was resolved within an hour, with the backlog cleared and the average truck turnaround time returning to under 20 minutes.

"We'd like to thank the transport community for their cooperation and patience this morning."

"We are now working to confirm the cause and put a contingency in place to ensure our service is not compromised in future," he said.

Line changes set to benefit Auckland

The ACX Diamond at Auckland's Fergusson container terminal

Container volumes through Ports of Auckland will benefit from a new shipping line consortium, which combines Hamburg Sud’s Asia, Australia and New Zealand Service (ANZL) service with the Cosco Container Lines (Coscon) and ICS consortium's Asia service.

“Ports of Auckland will be a net winner,” Chief Financial Officer Wayne Thompson said last week, when the service commenced with a call by ACX Diamond at Fergusson container terminal.

“In particular, we are excited about forming a closer relationship with Hamburg Sud and Hapag Lloyd. Both companies will have cargo on this service coming direct into Auckland, where previously it came through Tauranga.”

Mr Thompson said Ports of Auckland’s proximity to the large Auckland market, and to industrial hubs in South Auckland and Penrose, was attractive to cargo owners and freight companies in the current tough economic environment.

He added that productivity at the port had increased dramatically over the last 18-24 months, with further improvements, as a result of the company’s consolidation of container volumes on Fergusson terminal, expected over the next few months.

Another new service for Auckland

The Silverstone Express at Auckland's Jellicoe Wharf

Ports of Auckland welcomed another new shipping service yesterday (Thursday 23 July), when the Silverstone Express made its maiden call to Jellicoe Wharf.

Auckland will be the only New Zealand port of call for the new roll-on / roll-off NAPA (North America Pacific) service, operated by Partner Shipping AS and co-managed by Praxis Logistics.

The NAPA service will travel between New Zealand, Mexico, the United States, Singapore, serving Asia, and Australia.

The route is designed to cater for the import of cars, machinery and heavy vehicles from North America to South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, as well as exports from Australia and New Zealand back to North America.
