Port welcomes two new services

Dividing Line

September 2013, will see two new services call at Ports of Auckland - MSCs Capricorn Service, which currently calls at a number of New Zealand ports and Kiwi International Express (KIX), a new vessel sharing arrangement between ANL, APL and Hanjin Shipping.

Both services will link New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia. While the KIX is a recently formed service, the Capricorn service is MSCs main service calling New Zealand.

Kiosk use improvement

Recently, we completed a Six Sigma project aimed at increasing the number of trucks using the automated gate process at the port. The automated gate allows truck drivers to process themselves at kiosks and then automatically operate the road gates at Fergusson and Bledisloe Container Terminals.

Although the system has been in place since 2005, and it removes manual processing, therefore improving turn times for trucks, only 12% of containers through the ports container terminals used the process.

Through a process of engaging with stakeholders, conducting a survey of truck drivers and interviews with Dispatchers, the team were able to gain an understanding of issues faced by the end users.

The team have now implemented solutions such as:

  • Catering for empty container exports via the automated gate process
  • Providing a 3-hour window for slots
  • Providing more kiosks at the gate, the old road office and even one at the current road office so drivers can be assisted by POAL staff if needed

With the high level of engagement, the team have been able to increase the number containers going through the gates using the automated process to nearly 40%.

Thank you to all those who were involved in this project.
