Thousands flock for a look behind the ‘Red Fence’

Nearly 18,000 people took the opportunity to get behind Ports of Auckland’s iconic Red Fence as the company unlocked the gates for Auckland Anniversary weekend.

Ports of Auckland Head of Communications Matt Ball said the event was “a roaring success”.

“We were hoping we might get 3-4000 people a day, and we did on Saturday and Sunday, but on Monday over 10,000 people turned up. We’re flabbergasted! That’s the same as Laneway!”

It is the first time the port has held an open day on a commercial wharf. Captain Cook wharf, which is right at the foot of the Auckland CBD, is one of the ports’ main vehicle ship berths and is often packed with cars, trucks and heavy machinery.

Ports of Auckland Ltd is the port for New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland. It handles over 818,000 TEU (20ft-equivalent units), more than 1,400 ship calls and 4.4 m tonnes of break-bulk (non-containerised) cargo per annum. It is New Zealand’s import hub, New Zealand’s premier cruise port and the country’s main vehicle import gateway. A key partner to export and import industries, Ports of Auckland is 100%-owned by Auckland Council Investments Ltd, for the benefit of Auckland Ratepayers.
