Ports of Auckland's multi-purpose Multi Cargo facilities encompass seven wharves – several on the Waitemata waterfront, adjacent to the Auckland central business district, and one at Onehunga on the Manukau Harbour.
Jellicoe and Freyberg wharves are located between the two container terminals.
They handle a variety of breakbulk cargo, steel, timber, dry and liquid bulk, containers and vehicles. Many of the vessels calling at the Multi Cargo Wharves serve the Pacific Islands trades.
Breakbulk cargo and container handling at the Multi Cargo wharves
Ports of Auckland manages berthage and wharf space, with cargo-handling services provided by third-party stevedoring companies. Cargo-handling equipment is leased from Ports of Auckland. The available equipment includes a fleet of eight cargo-handling units, with fork hoists, a reach stacker and top-lift gantry trucks.
Multi Cargo wharves at the Auckland seaport include the finger wharves Marsden and Captain Cook, Freyberg and Jellicoe wharves in the middle of the port facility, and Wynyard Wharf, providing a bulk liquid terminal, in the west. Some bulk and breakbulk cargo is also handled at Bledisloe Wharf.
Many of these wharves handle Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels importing cars and other vehicles. A Vehicle Entry User System (VENUS) helps customers track the flow of cars from the ship to the showroom floor.
