In 2020 our container terminal will become the first in New Zealand to use automated straddle carriers to load and unload trucks and operate the container yard. It will be a hybrid or partial automation as our team will still drive the straddle carriers between our cranes and the yard. This is because we can get higher productivity by keeping manual straddles in this area.
Currently we use 13-metre-tall yellow manual straddle carriers, which stack containers up to three high. Our new blue automated straddle carriers will be nearly 16 metres tall and will be able to stack containers up to four high. This will increase our capacity by at least a third. To find out more about how our automation will work, have a look at this video from Tom Scott:
By automating our terminal and improving our terminal layout, we will almost double our capacity. We’ll be able to handle enough containers to support an Auckland population of around 2.7 million people.
Automation will also help to make our operations more sustainable by:
- Reducing fuel use, emissions, noise and light pollution
- Increasing our capacity without reclamation
- Keeping our costs down, making imports and exports cheaper
- Improving our profitability, so we earn more money for our owners: Aucklanders!
